The Perfect Summer Weekend

Written By : Grace Weidenhamer

Picture this: you clock out of work on a summer Friday afternoon. The sun is still high in the sky, a warm breeze rustles through the trees, and you’ve got two blissfully open days ahead of you. If a free weekend makes you wonder, “What now?” - I’ve got you covered. Here’s my idea of the perfect summer weekend.

Friday: Happy hour is a non-negotiable. After a full week of work, school, or just existing as a semi-functional human, cooking is out of the question. Grab a friend, get out on a patio, order some apps, and shake off a stressful week. Tonight is all about decompressing and easing into weekend mode. After happy hour, take yourself home, do an everything shower, and set the cozy vibes. Light a few candles, pop a bowl of popcorn, and turn on your go-to comfort movie. Early bedtime - we’ve got a full weekend ahead!

Saturday morning: Bright and early, head to a local farmers market. Stop by your favorite café first to grab an iced coffee and pastry (treat yourself!). While you’re at the market, grab a fresh bouquet and ingredients for a homemade dinner.

Saturday afternoon is for basking and relaxing. Take your current read outside, lounge by a pool, or sit on a blanket in the park. Once your nose is a little red (but please wear your SPF!) and you are properly relaxed, it’s time to start prepping dinner! Make a cocktail or mocktail with fresh mint and lemon, then fire up the grill and cook a meal with all that beautiful, local produce. Eat outside at golden hour. Maybe invite some friends or family over, sit around a campfire, roast s’mores, and look up at the stars.

Sunday morning: Slow it down and enjoy. Make some pancakes and a homemade latte. Take your breakfast outside. Take breakfast outside and listen to the birds. Then, it’s time to get moving — go for a hike, play tennis, hit the golf course, or take a long bike ride. Afterwards, treat yourself to something cold and sweet: an ice cream, a snow cone, whatever sounds refreshing.

Sunday afternoon: I guess we have to be productive at some point this weekend. Open the windows, knock out some light chores, and get groceries for the week. If the Sunday scaries creep in, take a break — read a book, call a friend, or take a walk in the afternoon sun.

End your weekend with something just for you: a face mask, journaling, stretching — whatever helps you reset. Self-care Sundays are essential.

Sure, a completely plan-free weekend might not be realistic. But sometimes, writing out your own version of a “perfect” weekend makes the idea of rest feel a little less overwhelming — and a lot more fun. My itinerary may not be the same as yours, but just remember it’s okay to relax and simply enjoy the bliss of the season.
