New Year’s Eve—one of those nights that looms on the calendar like a glittering promise, yet somehow manages to come with a side of pressure that makes me feel like it’s going to go completely wrong. The expectation to have your plans locked in, to wear that perfect outfit, and to be surrounded by a big crowd. It’s as if the night is supposed to define everything about the year ahead, giving you the perfect snapshot of where you’re at and where you’re going. But let’s be honest: New Year’s Eve doesn’t need to be a big to-do to be a big deal, and majority of the time, it’s not
I’ve had the big plans, I’ve had no plans. I’ve split my night with friends and boyfriends, I’ve stayed home with my sister and dogs and watched the ball drop in New York City. And pretty much every-time, no matter what I do, no matter where I am. I wake up the next day and it’s January 1st. Obviously so does everybody else. But, it makes me think, why put so much pressure on one night. So, before you go crazy, rethink your plans. So what if the rooftop party fell through, or you’re skipping the pre-paid open bar party this year in favor of something simpler. Maybe you're just not feeling the whole “midnight kiss with confetti and fireworks” thing this time around. And that’s okay. Actually, it’s more than okay. It might just be the best kind of night to embrace the unexpected magic of low-key revelry.
Here’s the thing: New Year’s Eve doesn’t need to be a race to the most extravagant evening—it’s about closing one chapter and stepping into another, however that looks. If you’ve got no plans, why not turn the night into your own little celebration? There’s something undeniably special about ringing in a new year with just you, or close friends with a cozy blanket, and a glass of something sparkling (bonus points if it’s in a cute glass). You can throw on your favorite loungewear or make a statement with an unexpected outfit choice, just because you can.
Or create your own tradition! Host a small gathering of friends—no fuss, just fun. The kind of get-together where everyone brings their own appetizers. And the playlist… Never forget about the playlist, it might be even more important than your outfit. I for one, think I have the best New Years Eve playlist known to man, so much that I’m going to link it to this article so that everyone can enjoy it.
If its not a party, maybe it’s a movie marathon featuring your favorite New Year’s films. Cue up When Harry Met Sally, The Holiday, or New Years Eve. Who says you have to be in Times Square to feel the excitement of the night?
And if you’re on your own? Even better. Treat yourself to a night of self-care, maybe you make a vision board for 2025, looking back on your past year thinking about what you want for the next. I was just saying to my boyfriend, I’ve never been so excited for a new year. Not because im over 2024, but because so many exciting things are happening in 2025, and things I want to MAKE happen. I love making a vision board with old magazines or printing out pinterest photos. Next week there’s an article in the line up on how to make the best vision board, so stay tuned for that.
So, what are you doing this New Year’s Eve?
