Holiday Blues? Here’s How to Embrace the Season

Written By : Jacqueline Rappa

I often get strange looks when I tell people I’m not a fan of the holidays. It’s not that I don’t appreciate the aesthetic — the velvet outfits, finding the perfect gift for a loved one, the city lights — it’s the wave of nostalgia that comes with it. I can’t help but feel a sense of loss when I think about the people who once made those family traditions so special and are no longer here, or how things have changed over the years. It’s a reminder of how quickly time passes.

I believe the best way to cope with this feeling is to create new traditions, even if it’s something you do on your own. Here are a few ideas to lift your spirits and give yourself something to look forward to:

  1. Pick up a new hobby: Treat yourself by finally signing up for that class you’ve been eyeing — whether it’s pottery, painting, or something else. It’s a chance to feel accomplished, explore your creativity, and meet new people. You never know what passion you might discover or who you might connect with along the way.

  2. Have a movie night at the theater: Whether you go solo or with a friend, heading to the movies can be a refreshing escape. Choose something that’ll make you laugh or feel inspired, throw on your coziest oversized sweater, sneak a little candy in your bag, and indulge in a large buttery popcorn.

  3. Do a closet clean-out: Closing out the year and starting the new one with a clean slate always feels great. Go beyond just setting aside clothes you no longer wear — take action! Research a local shelter or organization where you can donate them. It’s a small gesture that can make a big difference.

  4. Play tourist in your own city: While tourists can make things feel crowded and chaotic, use this as an opportunity to explore your home from a fresh perspective. Seek out hidden gems, discover authentic restaurants in new neighborhoods, and make a connection to your community.

  5. Plan solo date nights at home: Dedicate at least one evening a week to pampering yourself, just as you would if you were your own significant other. This could mean takeout from your favorite Chinese spot, a Trader Joe’s meal, or finally trying that recipe you’ve been eyeing. Pair it with a glass of red wine and treat yourself to dessert afterward. Set the mood with ambient music, and unwind with a rom-com. End the night with a relaxing bubble bath and a journaling session before bed. Focus on creating a calming atmosphere that leaves you feeling cared for.

The holiday season, like any other time of year, is an opportunity to connect with your inner self and focus on what truly brings you happiness. While sharing joy with others is wonderful, remember that you can also create it on your own. Embracing new traditions and making your own plans is a powerful way to take charge and shape your life into what you want it to be.
