Post Grad: Minus the Rules

Written By : Kitty Murphy

I graduated from college this past May and post grad has been nothing short of a dream, but not in the ways you’re thinking. I had been waiting for my graduation date to come for what seemed like forever. I swear to you guys, I was the happiest graduate there ever was, ask anyone in my family. I couldn’t even believe it was real, it was finally all over! Now here’s the thing, I am one of those people who never dreamt of work. I always knew I would end up doing something that was probably a bit uncommon, especially for my little hometown. You might be wondering how I knew this and it’s prettysimple actually, I have never really ‘fit in’ and I’ve honestly never wanted to. I never found joy in the things that people around me were doing in high school or college. I was recently listening to The Wizard Liz on YouTube (highly recommend her videos btw) and she was talking about how she never really felt like she belonged until she realized it was because she was made to stand out!!! And I absolutely love that, it all makes sense!

As I mentioned, I never really dreamt of work so I knew that upon graduation I did NOT want to move to a big city and get some big corporate job. I also knew that wanted to create my own path and live a slow life for at least a little while. I went to college in DC so being back in my hometown is truly a breath of fresh air. I’ve never really understood why people feel so compelled to do what is deemed ‘normal’ or what they ‘should’ do. Especially because so many people are unhappy doing that. Let me tell you right now, moving back home after college IS normal!!! Wanting to save money is normal. Wanting to spend time with your family after being away for so long is normal. And not wanting to do what you ‘should’ do post grad is one million percent okay. There really are no rules to this, find what makes you happy and go from there!
