We’ll Always have Summer: Embracing Late Summer Nostalgia

Written By : Grace Weidenhamer

Summer is starting to feel like The Summer I Turned Pretty, and not just because I’m writing this on the day season 3 comes out. Although the setting of the series starts right after Memorial Day, there’s something about the show that gives late-summer vibes. Maybe it’s the nostalgia, bittersweet endings, and holding on to those summer dreams you had back in May.

Living in the midwest, I’ve never spent my summers at the beach, but I can understand the feeling Belly gets when she goes back to Cousins at the beginning of the season. The start of summer always brings back the memories of days spent in swimsuits, running around the neighborhood and embracing all the free time we had. The days are longer, there’s energy and possibility in the air, and we can finally do the activities we’ve been itching for all winter.

Every summer, I have a list of shows and movies I rewatch, certain songs I listen to, and routines that only exist in the summer months. It’s nostalgic, it’s refreshing, it’s a time where I can try new things while indulging in the pleasures of summer's past.

As we head toward the end of summer, it’s bittersweet. I am already looking forward to fall, my favorite season, but reminiscing on all the adventures I’ve had, and maybe some that I never got around to. Maybe you had a summer wish, like Belly in season 1, that you’re trying to fulfill. You may be trying to cram in the last of your summer bucket list or make the plans you forgot to make at the beginning of the season.

As we wrap up summer, I urge us all to enjoy the golden evenings, feel the warm sun on our faces, and not take it too seriously. Fall is right around the corner, and we’re going to miss summer when it’s gone. So instead of stressing about what else there is to accomplish, let’s remember how much we looked forward to these days, let ourselves feel nostalgic for childhood summers, and appreciate the bittersweet ending to the season.

Although time moves fast and seasons come and go, just remember, We’ll Always Have Summer ;)
