—Reading is so sexy
Written By : Annalisa Frumento
The age of social media has tried its hardest to render any physical media completely useless, but I decided a while ago to fight against that. I have pledged to read as many books as I can by the end of 2026, and only being 4 months in I have read 12. Not bad for a full time student with little to no free time!
After class once a week it’s likely I stroll down to Seaport and head into Mcnally Jackson to find a new book, even if the one I’ve read isn’t even finished yet. There’s no better feeling than finding a new book to be excited about in my opinion. Recently, I just kicked my Albert Camus fixation. I read “The Stranger”, then “The Fall”, then I got into his philosophy and read “The Rebel”. This was all in the span of two weeks, and he was quickly crowned my new favorite author.
After this I completely shifted to another “author kick’” so to speak. I read two books back to back by Ottessa Moshfegh. First I read the compilation of short stories in “Homesick for Another World” I decided to keep going down the pretentious girl in New York route and read another, so I read “McGlue” subsequently. This phase of literary genius had me thinking I was the next great thinker of my generation, when in actuality I was using the dictionary to look up words during my reading sessions.
Although I’ve only shared a few books from my repertoire, I am going to stop my laundry list for a moment and share how I like to read. I used to be very much a “I don’t have time!” or “the conditions have to be perfect for me to concentrate!” type of girl. But I have changed my ways. What gets me to focus is emphasis on the outcome. For example, I have shifted my mindset to include questions like “Will I be better for doing this?” if the answer is yes, then I will quickly shift what I am doing to include something beneficial. In this specific case by applying this line of reasoning to reading, I have been able to enjoy so much more without the invisible boxes I used to put myself in.
Reading is so sexy- in the wise words of miss Kaia Gerber!
