Romanticizing Winter as a Summer Girl

Written By: Jacqueline Rappa

I live for warm days, salt air, and sun-kissed skin. So naturally, as December approaches, and I’m living in New York, this isn’t exactly my ideal circumstance: shorter days, breezy winds, and a whole lot of cold.

But this year, I’ve made it my mission to embrace the change instead of dreading it. And I’m starting with what I choose to wear. I recently cleaned out my closet, which was the best thing I could’ve done before the real chill hits. I finally parted ways with all the itchy sweaters I hated putting on and replaced them with cashmere and cotton pieces. Now, I actually look forward to getting dressed and layering for the season.

Next, I booked a winter trip. I love an island getaway, but I’ve never been anywhere that goes all out for the holidays. Growing up in NYC, holiday markets and tree lightings were a yearly routine, so they never felt like a big deal. But this year, I’m going to Edinburgh, and I’m so ready to be immersed in a new environment and feel like I’m living inside one of the novels I read. A trip centered around bookstores, witchy restaurants, castles, and wearing a sequin dress when the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s is exactly what I need.

And of course, I’m embracing all the festivities at home with the people I love. I recently went to a Friendsgiving, and being surrounded by my closest friends – laughing, eating, just being together – instantly lifted my spirits. Saying yes to other holiday celebrations has me eagerly waiting to sip wine, wear my fur coat, and listen to my favorite Christmas songs. I’m enthusiastic about decorating the tree with my mom and sister. I even bought ornaments that will make me smile every time I go downstairs (Conrad Fisher ornament included, obviously). These small moments are what will light me up this season.

So if you’re like me and you’re not naturally a winter person, fill your calendar with things that give you something to look forward to, no matter how big or small. Romanticize it by writing in your journal in front of a cozy fire, or dedicating a night to watch Little Women or your favorite holiday rom-coms. Slip into comfy pajamas and make yourself a hot cup of tea. The season is what you make it, and don’t forget to appreciate the people around you.
