I Wear the Same Thing Everyday

Written By : Hannah Corbett

This past weekend, I took a trip to New York. Usually, I bring a huge carry-on for an extra $70, and then I end up wearing the same pair of jeans, the same sweatshirt, and borrowing things from my mom and sister. So I wind up wasting my money and giving myself a shoulder ache from lugging this heavy carry-on for no reason. Because no, I don’t have a roller carry-on — I have a light blue Vera Bradley duffle bag. Mentally, I’m still seventeen. And yes, if you’re wondering, it’s more chic.

All of that aside, this weekend I said, you know what? I’m not putting myself through the struggle. I’m bringing my Boat and Tote, wearing one pair of jeans and a sweater with my Parke sweatshirt tied around my waist. I packed just my makeup, skincare, two thin long sleeves, and my underwear — because that’s literally all I need. And guess what? I didn’t even wear those two long sleeves. I spent the weekend wearing exactly what I thought I would — the sweater I was already wearing and whatever I borrowed from my mom and sister.

So now I’m back in South Carolina, but not for long, because my boyfriend, our dog, and I are moving back to New York. All the slowness of beach life — turns out, we both need that sense of hustle and bustle. So back to New York we go. And that leaves me with the biggest fist in my stomach — the one thing I want to avoid more than anything: packing. My. Closet.

The agony. The stress. I don’t want to do it. Mainly because I’m a secret hoarder. That concert shirt from sixth grade that I say, “Oh, but what if I want to wear it to bed one night?” — I’m not going to wear it to bed. All the jeans that just don’t fit me or my style anymore. The pajamas that are so thin they’d probably rip if I wore them.

Yes, you’re thinking what I’m thinking. I’m going to purge my closet.

I’m scared and avoiding it, but I’m doing it this week. And to prepare myself, I’m writing this to keep me in check. I literally only wear my staple clothes. I love my denim jeans. I love my plain sweaters, tank tops, and T-shirts. So I’m going to make piles, just like Carrie did in Sex and the City: “Keep” and “Give Away.”

So now, I’ll have a fully functional wardrobe with things I actually wear — without pushing aside the stuff I never do. And when it comes time for a shopping spree, there’ll actually be room and space — and a reason — for new clothes. And I’ll finally know what I want.
