The Perception of Love, Lifestyle, and Fashion in New York City: Through the Eye of an Influencer

Written By : Hannah Corbett

I want to word vomit on my keyword over how much I have to say about New York City. When I look back at my time living in Manhattan, it plays like my favorite movie. And you know how you feel about your favorite movie. It’s familiar, it's something you always want to watch and you could never get sick of. Sometimes you think that I'll just watch something new, but it’s never the same. That’s how I feel about New york.

Having not lived there in four years, I’ve had plenty of time to look back on my life in the city. Growing up just an hour away, getting to NYC was as easy as hopping on a train. But living there during college was a completely different experience. My mornings began with the sound of my alarm and bust streets. Each day felt like a mix of chaos and excitement, often marked by my attempts to navigate the subway while balancing an iced coffee—a true New Yorker’s morning ritual.

New York has a unique way of romanticizing everything. The bright lights and relentless energy creates a city that pulses with possibility. Like the movies show, every sidewalk teams with dreamers chasing their aspirations, while love—fleeting and profound—can bubble up in the most unexpected moments.  And I think it’s safe to say, the movies aren't too far off.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how much influencers actually influence the NYC lifestyle. It’s hard to scroll through Instagram or TikTok without being bombarded by images and videos of stylish streetwear, and fun events that you want to be a part of. These influencers have a remarkable ability to make the city feel like an endless playground filled with opportunities and adventure.

In a place as vibrant and diverse, the influence of social media feels almost omnipresent. It’s not just about showcasing the latest fashion trends or hot dining spots; it’s about crafting a lifestyle narrative that many aspire to live themselves. From pilates classes every morning, to dinner reservations every night, they have transformed the everyday experience of living in the city into something that seems both aspirational and accessible.

What strikes me most is how they manage to create a sense of community. Take influencers like, Halley Kate, and Acquired Style.  They have completely different niches, but I feel like at the base of it all their niche is Manhattan.  Sharing their favorite hidden gems, and personal stories, making followers feel like they’re part of it all. This can foster a sense of connection, especially for those day dreaming of moving to the city.

But with all this inspiration comes an undeniable pressure. The constant stream of perfect moments can lead to feelings of inadequacy or FOMO. It’s easy to forget that behind those videos are real people who experience the city in all its messy, imperfect glory. Not every day is filled with designer outfits or picturesque brunches; sometimes, it’s just about surviving the day.

The lifestyle promoted by influencers often revolves around privilege and access, painting a picture of New York that can feel unattainable to many. It raises questions about authenticity and representation in a city that prides itself on diversity. Are we seeing the full spectrum of New York life, or just a filtered version of it?

There’s also something refreshing about the way influencers have democratized access to city experiences. Their platforms can amplify voices and stories that resonate with a broader audience, allowing the richness of New York’s culture to shine through. As I think about the impact of influencers on the NYC lifestyle, I can’t help but feel a mix of admiration and skepticism. They’ve harnessed the power of social media to create a narrative that inspires many to explore. At the same time, it’s crucial to remember that life in New York—like any city—is a complex tapestry of experiences, not just the highlights captured in a feed.

Ultimately, while influencers have undoubtedly shaped perceptions of the NYC lifestyle, they are part of a larger story. The true essence of New York lies not just in the glamorous posts but in the everyday moments—those small encounters that make the city feel alive. It’s the rush of catching a train just in time, or the simple walk wandering through a new neighborhood.

So, as I scroll through my feed, I’m reminded to embrace the whole experience of living in this dynamic city, influencers and all. Yes, they can inspire us to seek out new adventures, but it’s up to us to create our own unique narratives, filled with both the extraordinary and the ordinary moments that make New York truly special.

The perception of love, lifestyle, and fashion in New York City is woven together with moments on every corner. Even though I don’t live there anymore, I know I’ll always return to the city that captured my heart. As seasons shift and trends ebb and flow, one truth remains constant: New York City invites you to lose yourself in its magic, embrace the unpredictable, and revel in the art of living. It’s a space where everything converges in a kaleidoscope of experiences, beckoning you to join in. Looking back, every moment was part of a captivating narrative—one that continues to inspire me long after leaving.
