Maximizing Christmas in your Twenties

Written By : Katie Smith

As the holiday season approaches, I always try to maximize every aspect of Christmas. Growing up, family traditions and events felt like heaven on earth—tracking Santa and binge-watching every Hallmark movie imaginable. Those cherished memories always come to mind, and as the holidays draw near, it’s easy to wish for a way to bring those childhood experiences back to life. However, creating Christmas traditions in your 20’s can be challenging! With the pressures of school, work, and adulting, some of the magic of the holiday season can feel like it’s been stolen. That’s why I’m here to help you revive it!

November and December are filled with joy, and we’re going to take every opportunity to get that childhood nostalgia back. Whether you’re in college, working, or figuring out life, there are plenty of fun ways to incorporate the Christmas spirit and share it with those around you.

Let’s start with the day-to-day. Elevate your fall and winter loungewear; cozy outfits should be a daily staple! A matching set, fuzzy socks, and Ugg slippers will not fail you. Make your at-home coffee in a fun mug—my personal favorite is the Anthropologie Icon Glasses, especially the ones with Christmas trees and candy canes. Try out a holiday coffee recipe you find on Pinterest! Light any holiday-scented candle you can find; this always makes my home feel warm and inviting. I like to channel my inner Amanda Woods from The Holiday—a good book, a cozy candle, a well-lit fire, and something comfy to wear! Turn on a Christmas movie while you’re cooking dinner! By integrating these little joys into your daily routine after work or as part of your morning routine, you’re making them a meaningful part of this season.

Decorate for Christmas early! If you live with friends, make an event of picking out a tree together. You can find or even create your own ornaments while enjoying a Christmas movie. I have a lengthy list of favorites if you need one :) Don’t forget to bake some Christmas cookies (we all know the Pillsbury ones) and set the mood with soft lighting. Creating traditions with friends and hosting gatherings is one of the best parts of the holidays! Maybe you can even annual party featuring Christmas cocktails, gift exchanges, and a home-cooked meal. I’m definitely waiting for my invite!

Gift giving is another way to spread some Christmas cheer! It is such a rewarding and special moment when you give a friend or family member something they’ve been wanting for a long time, or better yet, something creatively made for them. This Christmas specifically, I am taking on the challenge of hand-making most of my gifts. Catering them towards each individual person, or getting them something you can’t just buy online. I’m really into getting custom art, making cocktail rim salts, sugar scrubs, etc … for what each of my friends would love! Gift giving is cherished by all and so very special!

The tradition possibilities are endless! It truly comes down to being open and available this Christmas, and inviting your friends and family to join you!
